This essay reaches for the myth of the American family farmer, once a staple of the economic landscape, now relegated to romantic memories of a fruitful past. The business of agriculture is now a volume business, but families still farm, and the spirit of going it alone to feed one's family and one's country is still alive, if you look for it.
