Histoire naturelle

STATEMENT

Histoire naturelle is the title of a series of 18 photographs taken in the year 2000. The portrait of a young man was made in my studio in Cologne. The idea was to simulate a situation in outer space where a hard light is in front of the dark universe. Thinking about that, I felt encouraged to try out a similar setting in a natural environment. Therefore I went to Crete and took all the other photographs near the village of Achlada. You might consider these images as abstract or just a simulation like the one on a theatre stage. What you see is nothing but natural, just the background or other parts of the pictures are covered with black fabric. This sounds quite simple – and it is. But when I looked through my camera the objects seemed to have changed. I was surprised in which way artificial and natural aspects complement each other.
